5 important springtime weather tips for UK e-bike riders
For those of you who have discovered the practicality and pure joy of e-biking, it is important to be prepared to ride in all weather conditions.

Springtime weather in the UK can be quite unpredictable, with cold winter temperatures rising rapidly, giving way to sudden rain showers and thunderstorms. Riding along springtime trails that are wet and muddy is still a lot of fun, and visually stunning as the trees start to blossom and flowering plants bloom.
A good e-bike is designed to function well in all weather conditions, also on slippery terrain. Nonetheless, you need to be aware of the various challenges that come with e-biking in changing weather conditions. Here are 5 important springtime weather tips for UK e-bike riders.
1 – Protect your e-bike against the elements
With wet and muddy roadways in the rainy weather, your e-bike will be susceptible to rust. Rust not only looks bad, but will cause corrosion that damages the metal parts on your e-bike over time. It is a good idea to get a quality spray product at your local auto supply store to protect your e-bike from rust. Liberally spray all of the metal parts on your e-bike, including the wheel spokes and chain.
If your e-bike doesn’t already have them, install mudguards. These will both protect you from mud, slush, and debris that can splash you while riding, and help keep your e-bike’s frame clean. Mudguards can also protect the moving parts of your e-bike from being damaged by street grit and gravel that can fly upwards in gusts of wind.
Your e-bike’s motor will have a plastic casing that protects it from the elements. Inspect the casing to be sure that it is free of any cracks or loose bolts. The motor casing will have a drain hole that shouldn’t be clogged with a build-up of debris.
2 – Inspect your tyres for wet weather e-biking
To ride on trails and roadways that could become wet and slippery, you should inspect your tyres to make sure that they have good tread. This is an important safety measure, since good tread helps prevent tyre punctures, and gives your e-bike better grip when riding around sharp bends, or when having to suddenly apply the brakes.
Then check the tyres using a portable gauge to make sure they have the proper tyre pressure for your riding conditions. Tyre pressure will typically need to be slightly lowered on wet trails to provide more grip and keep your e-bike from slipping and sliding. As a good rule of thumb, if you feel a lot of vibration when riding your e-bike or sense that you don’t have enough traction, lower the tyre pressure by 5 PSI. The minimum and maximum tyre pressure should be visible on the side of your tyres.
3 – Dress appropriately
Wear protective gear to make sure that you stay dry and are protected from the elements. It is paramount to wear a light-weight waterproof jacket over your cycling jersey. This jacket should keep you warm but not make you sweat.
If the weather is still cold outside, you can layer your clothing by wearing a shirt with a wool and cotton blend underneath your jersey. Find some quality waterproof gloves that will keep your hands warm and dry. A cycling cap with a brim to keep rain from getting into your eyes can be worn right underneath your protective helmet. There are plenty of quality waterproof cycling trousers available that will keep your legs warm and dry.
Lastly, try to find a good pair of all-weather cycling shoes. If the weather is still quite cold outside, overshoes can be worn over your regular walking shoes. These waterproof boots will keep your feet warm and are aerodynamically designed to improve cycling performance.
4 – Use caution when riding
Using your e-bike in wet weather conditions can be a lot of fun, but you want to make sure that you understand the best safety procedures. It is a good idea to start out riding more slowly during the springtime on roads and trails that can be very slippery, both during and after rainfall. This will give yourself a chance to get acclimated to riding in wet weather conditions. Not riding too fast in windy, chilly weather will also help keep you warmer.
Lowering the seat on your e-bike a little bit will keep your feet closer to the ground, which aids in ease of pedalling your e-bike in wet and slippery conditions. Make sure that you pay close attention to road signs when riding, and give yourself plenty of time to slow down before coming to a stop.
Use ample caution and gradually brake before approaching sharp bends and turns. A good rule of thumb when you come to a particularly slippery trail or roadway is to just stop pedalling. Take your feet off the pedals and let the motor allow you to coast across wet and slippery terrain.
5 – Thoroughly clean your e-bike after riding
An important factor in preventing rust, corrosion, and wear and tear on your e-bike when riding during the springtime is to keep it clean. Regularly cleaning your e-bike is easy, quick and inexpensive. Use a soft-bristled brush to wipe dirt, mud and slush off your e-bike.
If you find any rust spots on the metal parts of your e-bike, spray these areas with a certified rust removal product, and allow the product to sit for the amount of time specified on the package directions. Then use a concentrated bike cleaning solution to give your e-bike a quick washing. Rinse your e-bike with a hose and nozzle, and then thoroughly dry it with a clean towel.
The grime and mud that splashes upwards when riding on wet trails and roadways can also cause your e-bike’s drive chain to wear down. To prevent this, use a specialised product for degreasing and cleaning the chain, and then apply a wet lubricant. This lubricant will both ensure maximum performance when riding and prolong the life of your e-bike’s chain.
So don’t let unpredictable spring weather conditions dampen your fun. You can still enjoy your touring and commuting ventures on your e-bike at one of the most beautiful times of year to be exercising and spending time outdoors.
